Prosecution of the sinking of a boat at the Whale Festival in Bac Lieu
Police have initiated a case of a boat sinking at the Whale Festival in Bac Lieu that left two people dead and one missing.
On the morning of April 8, Colonel Tran Hoang Nhu - Head of Dong Hai District Police (Bac Lieu) said that the investigation agency had initiated a case and detained Doan Thanh Nam (35 years old) for the act of "Violating regulations on waterway traffic control".
Nam was identified as the captain of the boat with license plate BL 93.322, carrying about 40 people participating in the Whale Festival on the morning of April 6.

Accordingly, when the ship was about 2km from the Ganh Hao estuary (Dong Hai district), it encountered big waves and strong winds and sank. The accident caused the deaths of two female students: Tran Tu Tran (17 years old, residing in Cay Giang hamlet, Long Dien commune) and Le Ngoc Han (16 years old, residing in hamlet 1, Ganh Hao town). In addition, the accident also caused Luu Thi My Duyen (19 years old, residing in hamlet 1, Ganh Hao town) to go missing.
According to the authorities, the boat that crashed was not under the management of the festival organizers. Immediately after the accident, the departments of Dong Hai district and Bac Lieu province supported each family of the deceased with 16.5 million VND, and those being treated in the hospital with 8 million VND.
