Not just chayote!...

March 15, 2015 08:48

(Baonghean) - Not only are chayote crops facing unsold stock, but farmers in Quynh Luu are also experiencing a drop in prices for other vegetables and fruits they produce.

Currently, in the communes of Quynh Luong, Quynh Minh, Quynh Bang, etc., the price of tomatoes ranges from 1,000 to 2,000 VND/kg; kohlrabi is nearly 2,000 VND/kg, cabbage is nearly 500 VND/head, and white mustard greens are from 500 to 1,000 VND/kg. Compared to previous seasons, vegetable prices have dropped to only 1/3, and for some types, only about 1/5...

Thus, the sweat and hard work of farmers after many days of toil have now become "for nothing"; this "problem" requires local authorities and relevant sectors to actively intervene and find solutions so that people can produce with peace of mind; not to mention the situation of "high prices in the market but low yields" due to traders "forcing" down prices; while the purchase price at the farm is low, the selling price at the market remains high as usual. Ultimately, farmers are still the ones who suffer the most...

On the other hand, it is also time for farmers themselves to change their farming practices, from cultivation habits and market forecasting to the application of technological advancements in seed selection, care, harvesting, and preservation... in order to improve product quality and reach sustainable markets.
