What should candidates do if they don't meet the graduation requirements?

July 28, 2015 08:08

According to statistics from the Ministry of Education and Training, 8.42% of candidates taking this year's national high school graduation exam failed to graduate.

Associate Professor Tran Van Nghia, Deputy Director of the Department of Examination and Quality Assurance, Ministry of Education and Training, observed: “Among them, there are certainly some candidates with high university entrance exam scores but failing grades in the high school graduation exam, but this is insignificant. Those who are good at Math rarely fail Literature because the Literature exam questions are manageable and anyone can answer them to avoid failing. However, those who are good at Literature can still fail Math.” Therefore, the number of candidates with high university entrance exam scores but who do not meet the graduation requirements, if any, are mainly those using the results of subject combinations in social science majors, where Math is the subject for graduation.

According to regulations, candidates must pass the high school graduation exam to be considered for university/college admission. Therefore, Dr. Nguyen Duc Nghia, Deputy Director of the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City, affirmed that these candidates must retake the high school graduation exam the following year. However, to avoid being disadvantaged, candidates can apply to retain their exam results. The regulations allow candidates who have taken all the required subjects but have not graduated and have not been disciplined with the cancellation of their exam results to retain the scores of subjects in which they scored 5 points or higher in the exam held the following year for consideration of graduation.

Therefore, if a candidate failed the Math exam in 2015, they only need to retake that subject the following year. If the candidate does not use their retained scores, they must take all registered subjects to be considered for graduation.

Whether or not those retained credits can be used for university admission is decided by the president of that university or college.
