The panel of judges determined that Nam's actions were hooliganism, a crime against his parents and adoptive parents, so he must be sentenced to the highest sentence.

On September 28, the High People's Court in Ho Chi Minh City rejected the appeal and upheld the death sentence for defendant Huynh Thanh Nam (born in 1993 in Ho Chi Minh City) for murder.

The panel of judges agreed with the first instance verdict, finding that Nam's actions were hooliganism, a crime against his parents and raisers, and therefore should be punished with the highest sentence.

According to the records, on the evening of November 9, 2015, after going out drinking, Nam saw his father arguing with his mother, so he went back to his room to get drugs to use.

Nam looked at his relatives before being escorted to prison by the police.

Nam's father followed and found out, so he cursed and kicked Nam's hand. Angry, Nam rushed in and beat him, then grabbed a pair of scissors and attacked his father.

Nam's mother was holding her child and ran in to stop him, but was unable to do so, so she shouted for help. Neighbors ran over to take the father to the emergency room, but he died shortly after.

At court, Nam's mother asked for a lighter sentence for her son. She said: "My husband is dead, there is no way to change him, so I ask the court to reduce Nam's sentence so that he has a chance to come home and take care of his child. A month after his birth, his wife disappeared without visiting or paying any attention to him, so I had to take care of him instead." However, the mother's request was not accepted by the court.
