After losing control of eastern Mosul, over the past week, the Islamic terrorist organization IS has carried out a series of car bomb attacks in the capital Baghdad, causing dozens of civilian casualties.

"We are determined to destroy terrorism, which has caused tragic tragedies for Iraqi citizens. I have ordered the air force to carry out strikes on IS positions in Hosaiba and Albu Kamal inside Syrian territory, as a way to punish those who carried out the recent bombings in Baghdad," Reuters news agency quoted Prime Minister Abbadi as saying on February 24.

Hosaiba is a city in Iraq, while Albu Kamal is located in Syria.

In an official statement from the Iraqi Air Force Command, on the morning of February 24, F-16 fighter jets of the country's air force took off to destroy the IS headquarters in Albu Kamal.

US-backed Iraqi military forces drove IS fighters out of most of the cities they captured in 2014 and 2015.

Last month, Iraqi government forces launched an offensive in the east of the strategic city of Mosul and recently launched an offensive in the west of the city.

The city of Mosul is divided into two halves by the Tigris River.
