At high school level, the Vietnam Historical Science Association and the Ministry of Education and Training agree that History is still a compulsory subject in the curriculum but is not integrated with the subject of Citizenship and the Fatherland.

On the evening of December 7, a meeting between representatives of the Ministry of Education and Training and representatives of the Vietnam Historical Science Association took place, chaired by the Central Propaganda Department.

At the meeting, it was affirmed that integration is a trend in the world, but Professor Tran Thi Vinh, Hanoi Pedagogical University, said that many countries choose to make History an independent and compulsory subject in the overall general education program.

Meanwhile, through a survey of the History training situation in more than 40 countries around the world provided by UNESCO, a representative of the Steering Committee for Curriculum and Textbook Innovation said: "The number of countries teaching History integrated into the general education program is equally large. The important issue is how do we determine the educational goals?

In the spirit of fundamental and comprehensive educational innovation approved in Resolution 29, education will shift from a knowledge transfer model to a model of assessing learners' capacity. With this goal, integrating subjects will help reduce the knowledge load for students and form their comprehensive capacity."

After discussion, the Ministry of Education and Training and the Vietnam Historical Science Association have some basic points of agreement.

At the primary level, History will be integrated into the general subject along with some other sciences, mainly teaching History through stories to create interest for students. At the secondary level, two options need to be further considered.

Option 1: Let History and Geography be two independent subjects, add a section to integrate knowledge between these two subjects so that students can develop their ability to synthesize.

Option 2: Build an integrated History and Geography subject, including History and Geography, related knowledge will form interdisciplinary topics. Students will only have one book, less heavy and cumbersome.

At the high school level, the Vietnam Historical Science Association and the Ministry of Education and Training agree that History is still a compulsory subject in the curriculum at this level, but History is not integrated into the subject of Citizenship and the Fatherland. Students who choose to study History for the university entrance exam will study advanced History. This is an independent subject. Students do not follow History as a career orientation but will study compulsory History and Geography with basic knowledge. This ensures that all students still study History but at different levels.

After agreeing on the general policy, scientists and the Steering Committee for Curriculum and Textbook Innovation will continue to discuss to reach a consensus on how to make the reform of History education truly effective, attractive, and practical for students.
