Kim Jong-un visited the Chemical Material Institute of the Academy of Defense Science, which develops North Korean missiles, KCNA reported today. "He instructed the institute to further develop solid-fuel rocket engines and rocket warheads."
It is not yet clear whether North Korea has mastered the technology to help ballistic missile warheads withstand high temperatures during re-entry.
The news comes as North Korea's nuclear and missile programs have heightened regional tensions, especially after Pyongyang last month tested two intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) capable of reaching the United States.
The US and North Korea then exchanged threats, mentioning military measures. North Korea announced plans to launch missiles towards the US Pacific island of Guam but has now postponed the plan to wait to see what Washington does.
US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on August 22 helped ease bilateral tensions, praising North Korea for "showing restraint" and not conducting nuclear or missile tests after the United Nations passed new sanctions. He hoped this was a sign that Pyongyang was ready to engage in peace and denuclearization dialogue with Washington "in the near future."
