Chairwoman of the Federation Council (upper house of the Russian parliament) Valentina Matvienko said on September 8 that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has confirmed his readiness to visit Russia. RIA news agency quoted the Chairwoman of the Federation Council after she met with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Pyongyang.
According to Ms. Matvienko, the North Korean leader wants peace. North Korea is also participating in dialogues with the US to gradually implement the commitments reached at the US-North Korea summit in Singapore last June.
The Russian Federation Council Chairwoman also said earlier that she would deliver a letter from Russian President Vladimir Putin to the North Korean leader.
US President threatens to impose tariffs on all imports from China

US President Donald Trump on September 7 threatened to impose tariffs on all imports from China into the US, a move that could escalate tensions with Beijing.
Speaking to reporters in Fargo, North Dakota, President Trump emphasized: "Then there is an additional $267 billion worth of goods imported from China that are ready to be considered for immediate tariffs if I want." This means that almost all goods imported from the world's second largest economy into the US are subject to additional tariffs.

An airport official said the attack occurred at around 8am (12pm Hanoi time) on September 8 and did not cause any casualties or disrupt flights. It is not clear who launched the three Katyusha rockets, according toAP.
Basra is the second largest international airport in Iraq, located in the southern city of Basra. The US Consulate is located adjacent to the facility.
Iraqis angry about corruption, poor public services and rising unemployment are protesting against Iran, blaming Iran's influence in Iraqi politics for the problems.
LUnited Nations efforts to promote conflict resolution in Yemen

On September 8, the UN special envoy for Yemen Martin Griffiths announced an agreement to evacuate people needing medical care from the capital Sana'a, currently occupied by Houthi rebels, and said the first humanitarian flight to Cairo (Egypt) will take off in a week.
The UN official made the announcement after the UN-sponsored peace talks on the Yemen situation in Geneva, Switzerland, from September 6-8 ended without any breakthrough results because the Houthi forces did not send representatives to attend.
Yemen has been in chaos since the outbreak of conflict between Houthi rebels and forces loyal to former President Ali Abdullah Saleh and forces loyal to the government of President Mansour Hadi.
US recalls diplomats from countries cutting ties with Taiwan

Staff from US missions in the Dominican Republic, El Salvador (Caribbean) and Panama (Central America) have been recalled by Washington after the governments of these countries severed ties with Taiwan "to discuss (issues) related to (their) recent decisions to no longer recognize" Taiwan.
The diplomats will meet with "U.S. government officials to discuss what the United States can do to support strong, independent economies and institutions in the Caribbean and Central America," Nauert said on September 8.
Washington has repeatedly expressed concern about China's efforts to force countries to cut diplomatic ties with Taiwan, which Beijing considers a breakaway province.
Egypt sentences dozens to death for murder

On September 8, Egypt sentenced 75 people to death for their involvement in a protest in support of the Muslim Brotherhood movement in August 2013 - the time after the military coup that overthrew then-Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi.
According to the verdict, all of those sentenced to death were found guilty of security-related crimes such as inciting violence, murder and organizing illegal protests. The list includes several leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood movement such as Essam al-Erian, Mohamed Beltagi and famous preacher Safwat Higazi.
China-Korea senior officials meeting

On September 8, Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi and Special Envoy of the President of the Republic of Korea Chung Eui-yong held consultations in the Chinese capital Beijing.
South Korea's top security adviser has announced his recent visit to North Korea as a special envoy of President Moon Jae-in, Xinhua reported. In addition, Chinese and South Korean officials also discussed the issue of promoting political reconciliation on the Korean Peninsula and exchanged views on bilateral relations.
Italian city bans snacking in downtown area

Violators could face fines of up to 500 euros (about 14 million VND). Authorities said the ban applies between 12-15 hours and 18-22 hours every day, aiming to reduce overcrowding and littering on central streets, causing inconvenience to local residents.
The government has also distributed leaflets in both Italian and English to inform tourists. Florence is estimated to welcome more than 10 million visitors each year.
