Golden experience when driving a car in a road tunnel

1. Use lights and horn

This is an absolute requirement when driving through a tunnel. Turn on your low beams even when the tunnel is bright. For non-motorized vehicles, lights or a light emitting device must be used to signal when driving through these sections of road.

Using a horn in a tunnel will amplify the sound, making it very loud. Therefore, when driving in a tunnel, absolutely do not use a horn. In case you want to signal other vehicles, you can flash your lights; do not use priority lights (except for vehicles with priority according to regulations).

2. Driving and stopping in road tunnels

For cars, the maximum speed allowed is 60 km/h, minimum 30 km/h. The distance between two adjacent cars on the same lane is 30m.

In addition to the regulations on driving speed when driving in road tunnels, you need to pay attention to some of the following notes and regulations on safe driving:

- Absolutely do not overtake other motor vehicles while driving in the tunnel.

- Stopping in a road tunnel must be done at authorized stopping points. In case of emergency, turn on the signal to let other vehicles know at a recognizable distance.

- Absolutely do not reverse or turn around while driving in a tunnel because visibility is limited.

- Comply with the prescribed time allowed to circulate through the road tunnel.

3. In case of fire or explosion

First, turn off the car engine but do not remove the key, look for the fire alarm button located in the tunnel to signal other vehicles and the tunnel management department.

If possible, use the fire extinguisher located in the basement to extinguish any fire caused by the incident.

Each tunnel system will be equipped with emergency exits. Quickly find the exit, enter it, and call the management center via the emergency phone number located in the exit.

Obey the evacuation instructions over the loudspeaker system.

* Fines for cars violating traffic rules in road tunnels

If drivers do not comply with regulations when driving through road tunnels, they may be fined by law enforcement.

Specifically, for cars: Point a, Clause 4, Article 8, Decree 71/2012/ND-CP of the Prime Minister stipulates administrative sanctions for violations in road tunnels as follows:

Fine from 800,000 VND to 1,200,000 VND and hold driving license for 60 days (retake theory test) when car driver violates:Driving in a road tunnel without using low beam lights; reversing or making a U-turn in a road tunnel; stopping, parking or overtaking in a road tunnel in an incorrect place.

Fine from 500,000 VND to 1,000,000 VNDFor drivers driving in road tunnels without using headlights; stopping, parking, overtaking in road tunnels in places not specified; making a U-turn in road tunnels.
