(Baonghean) - On June 1, 2019, in Hanoi, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc attended the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the Military Industry - Telecommunications Group (Viettel) (June 1, 1989 - June 1, 2019) and awarded the First Class Independence Medal.

Large-scale, efficient state-owned enterprises in Vietnam

Established in 1989, Sigelco (the predecessor of Viettel) was tasked with transferring a portion of the military's experienced technical staff to the economy, contributing to the country's development.

After 30 years, the economic soldiers have built Viettel into one of the 30 largest telecommunications companies in the world, in the group of 500 most valuable brands globally.

Viettel is present in 17 countries, investing and doing business in 10 foreign markets, with annual revenue reaching more than 10 billion USD, equivalent to 3% of Vietnam's GDP.

In 30 years of operation, from the initial main business of telecommunications construction and installation, Viettel has now developed 5 new business lines: telecommunications & IT services; telecommunications electronic equipment research and production, defense industry, network security industry and digital service provision industry.

Viettel is considered one of the largest and most effective state-owned enterprises in Vietnam, reflected in the criteria of largest revenue, highest state budget contribution, and highest brand value.

Since 2000, Viettel has generated over 1.78 million billion VND in revenue; profit reached 334 trillion VND; equity capital reached 134 trillion VND; profit/equity ratio regularly reached 30-40%. Viettel has spent 3,500 billion VND on social programs.

Viettel effectively coordinates with localities in the province, implementing social programs of profound humanitarian significance.

Specifically, in the period from 2013 to 2018, the total funding that Viettel has provided for social activities in Nghe An has reached nearly 85 billion VND. Viettel's social security activities have left a deep impression on the people of Nghe An.

Through the program "Breeding cows to help the poor in the border areas", nearly 3,600 cows have been given to poor households in 6 border districts;Because I love to studyis a humanitarian bridge supporting 1,190 scholarships for poor children each year; the program "Popularfree roadInternet" to more than 1,000 educational units across the province; "Heart for youhas supported surgeries for pediatric patients, with a total budget of nearly 3 billion VND over the years; along with many other meaningful humanitarian programs:100 dollar house, “Building small-scale residential bridges to ensure traffic safety,Donating cement to harden floors, renovate houses and livestock barns,Tet for the poor”...

At the ceremony, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc commented: “Viettel is a living proof of the effectiveness of state-owned enterprises in key areas, creating a foundation for socio-economic development; dispelling the notion that state-owned enterprises can hardly operate effectively. Viettel shows the lesson that no matter what economic sector a business is in, people and management are the key to success.”

Previously, Viettel had twice received the title of Hero (Hero of Labor - 2007; Hero of the People's Armed Forces - 2013).

At the 30th anniversary celebration,continue the mission "Innovation for people", Viettel announced to continue playing a leading role in the field of telecommunications and information technology, pioneering in the field of technology and industry, implementing digital transformation and creating a digital society in Vietnam.

Viettel will promote three high-tech industries: Telecommunications electronics industry, defense industry and cyber security industry; to keep pace with the world in the 4.0 revolution, while making an important contribution to firmly protecting the country's security and sovereignty in both real and virtual space.

In the coming development phase, Viettel continues to build the most modern telecommunications and IT infrastructure.as a foundation to bring 4.0 technology into all areas of life.

In the immediate future, Viettel will invest to soon commercialize 5G ultra-wideband technology, creating a widespread IoT connection infrastructure to connect billions of devices, manage and control automatically at super-fast speed, without delay.

Along with that, Viettel pioneereddevelop and provide digital applications and services, including digital payments - Mobile money, digital content, especially in the fields of education, e-commerce, search engines and social networks.
