According to Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh, over the past 75 years, under the leadership of the Party and the guidance and initial and direct foundation laying by President Ho Chi Minh, the diplomatic sector has always accompanied the nation, making important contributions to the revolutionary achievements.
Right from the early days of the founding of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam in 1945, in the situation of "internal and external enemies" and "a life-or-death situation", under the genius leadership of Uncle Ho, Vietnamese diplomacy was brave and skillful, contributing to protecting the young revolutionary government.
During the resistance war, diplomacy became an important front of strategic significance, working side by side with the military to achieve historic victories at the negotiating table (such as the Geneva Agreement in 1954 and the Paris Agreement in 1973), forcing the enemy to recognize our country's independence, sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity.
In the renovation process, diplomacy is the core force, pioneering in the struggle to bring the country out of the embargo, expand foreign relations and international integration, creating favorable conditions for national construction and development as well as contributing to creating a peaceful and stable environment in the region and the world.
Through the revolutionary stages with the entire Party, the entire army, and the entire people, the team of cadres working in foreign affairs has matured in all aspects, from vision, thinking, courage to ingenuity, flexibility, and sensitivity, but also extremely steadfast and loyal to the interests of the nation.
Capacity, experience and high adaptability are the "fulcrums" for the successes of Vietnamese diplomacy in recent years, as Australian expert Carl Thayer shared with the Government E-newspaper on the occasion of the beginning of the new year 2020.
Mr. Carl Thayer said that Vietnam has built a team of highly professional diplomats with a deep understanding of international relations and domestic politics, making diplomacy an inseparable part of efforts to handle external relations.
Vietnam also has a lot of experience through international conferences, such as the Geneva Conference in 1954, the Paris Conference on Ending the War and Restoring Peace in 1973 and the International Conference on Cambodia in 1991, and successfully organized a series of international events such as the Francophone Conference in 1997, the APEC High-Level Weeks in 2006 and 2017, the ASEAN Summits in 1998 and 2010, the US-North Korea Summit in 2019, etc.
Deputy Prime Minister Pham Binh Minh said that this was achieved thanks to the inheritance of good traditional values of previous generations, the direct guidance of the Politburo, Party and State leaders, and the efforts of generations of diplomatic staff.
The Deputy Prime Minister believes that with the glorious tradition of 75 years of construction and growth, Vietnamese diplomacy and current foreign affairs officials will continue to move forward, marking new successes for the country's new revolutionary journey./.
