The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said that La Nina has returned, this winter will be colder than last winter.

Cold air intensifies, thick fog covers Hanoi, making it as hazy as Sa Pa

Around the end of December, there will be severe cold spells. January and February are the peak months of severe cold in the North.

Mr. Hoang Phuc Lam, Head of the Department of Medium- and Long-term Meteorological Forecasting (Central Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting) said that La Nina has returned, and this year's winter will be colder than last year's winter.

The latest data on sea surface temperatures in the eastern Pacific Ocean is currently about minus 0.8 degrees Celsius lower than the long-term average (TBNN), according to standards, it has begun to reach the La Nina threshold.

“The last months of 2017 and the beginning of 2018 are the months when the ocean atmosphere transitions to La Nina with a probability of 50-60%. At this time, that possibility has become a reality and since the end of November, the La Nina phenomenon has begun to appear,” said Mr. Lam.

However, according to Mr. Lam, although reaching the La Nina threshold, it still takes time to affect the atmospheric circulation and then manifest different climate patterns. The latest forecasts also show that the La Nina phenomenon will not last long, around April-May 2018 the La Nina phenomenon has weakened, so the impacts of La Nina are not strong and do not last long.

In the past, La Nina mostly appeared in winter. The impact of La Nina is relatively complex and unclear. Due to the influence of La Nina, Vietnam, the East Sea and Southeast Asian countries will have more rainfall than the average. Because this La Nina phenomenon is not long and the impact is not strong, the increase in rainfall may not be significant.

Due to La Nina, this year's winter is likely to be colder than last year's, as last year was a warm winter, but compared to the average, it is still only approximately the same.

In the coming time, severe cold will appear in many areas of the North and North Central regions. It is forecasted that around the end of December, severe cold will appear. Then from January and February, severe cold will peak. The time before Tet in the Northern provinces will be cold when the cold air strengthens, accompanied by rain.

In the Central region, from now until Tet, there will be a lot of rain, lasting 5-7 days, then stopping and then raining again.

The weather in the South in the coming time is relatively good, with little rain, if any, it will only be short and end quickly.
