The newly opened bamboo and rattan weaving class in Yen Na - Tuong Duong has 35 students participating.

The class started on the afternoon of August 24 and is expected to last 60 days with 191 hours of study, including 156 hours of practice. During this time, students will be taught how to make handicraft products for export according to the tastes of foreign markets.

The funding for organizing the classes is drawn from vocational training for rural workers according to government policy.

The class mainly guides people to practice products, not focusing on theory.

Yen Na is a land with abundant weaving materials such as bamboo, rattan, reed, and rattan, which are good conditions for developing the weaving profession. The Khmu people are a good weaving community, but for a long time, they have only been used to making traditional products to serve the daily life of people in the highlands.

The class hopes to change people’s perception of traditional crafts, thereby helping indigenous products to rise up and become commodities when brought to the market. The business that teaches the craft also promises to purchase all products for people attending the class.

This is the first time the Khmu people in Yen Na have learned to weave. Previously, people mainly looked at each other and followed traditional experiences.

According to the representative of the Tuong Duong District Vocational Training Center, the demand for vocational training for rural workers in the highlands is currently very high. According to the registration of the people, in 2016, 19 vocational training classes can be opened, but the budget only allows for opening a few classes.

In addition to the bamboo weaving class in Yen Na, Tuong Duong Vocational Training Center recently opened a class teaching cage fish farming techniques in Tam Quang commune.
