For the first time, a 58-year-old woman gave birth in Vietnam.

On August 20, the Hanoi Hospital of Andrology and Infertility announced that for the first time, a 58-year-old woman, who had been postmenopausal for 3 years, gave birth to a healthy baby at this hospital.

The baby boy weighed 3.2 kg and was very healthy.

According to Dr. Le Thi Thu Hien, Deputy Director and Head of the Hospital's Reproductive Support Department, the above mother has special circumstances and wants to have children, in a situation where she is old and has gone through menopause.

Doctors warn of possible situations and risks of IVF failure, older mothers will not be in good health to care for and raise their children to adulthood, however the mother still decides to donate eggs and sperm to get pregnant.

Fortunately, the technique was successful and the mother gave birth in 2016. This is the second time a postmenopausal woman has successfully undergone in vitro fertilization and become pregnant in Vietnam.

Previously in 2016, the Post Office Hospital successfully assisted in reproduction for a 53-year-old postmenopausal woman.

According to Dr. Hien, for elderly pregnant women who want to have a successful pregnancy, the most important thing is the quality of the uterine lining, because the best age for women to give birth is before 25, followed by the period before 35 years old.

Ms. Hien also said that there is a new trend that many people are interested in: storing eggs and sperm at a young age for future use, especially for those who plan to get married late, or people with cancer who need to store eggs and sperm before treatment to avoid damage to the quality of eggs and sperm...

Ms. Hien said that with current technology, there are cases where eggs and sperm are frozen for 15 years. When thawed for reproductive support, the quality of the eggs and sperm after thawing is still very good.
