The first successful implementation of modern artificial cervical vertebra replacement technique in Nghe An
(Baonghean.vn) - Nghe An Trauma and Orthopedics Hospital has successfully performed surgery to replace artificial vertebrae with adjustable height and fixing screws.
This is the first time this modern artificial vertebra has been used in surgery in the province, marking a great step forward in the medical field at Nghe An Trauma and Orthopedics Hospital in particular, as well as Nghe An's medical sector in general.
Using the most advanced artificial cervical vertebrae in surgery
Patient LTT, 52 years old, in Anh Son district - Nghe An had a domestic accident, a hard object fell on his head, causing a fracture of the C5 cervical vertebrae. After the injury, the patient had sharp pain in the cervical spine, both arms ached and had difficulty moving. The patient was taken to Nghe An Trauma and Orthopedics Hospital by his family. After examination, the patient was diagnosed with cervical spine injury: Fracture of the C5 A4 vertebrae - Frankel D.
After consultation, the doctors decided to perform C5 cervical vertebra replacement surgery using the method of vertebral body resection, bone grafting and cervical spine fixation (ACCF), using height-adjustable artificial cervical vertebrae with fixing screws to treat the patient.

The surgery was performed by the surgical team of Doctor CKII. Tran Van Bien - Deputy Director, Head of Neurosurgery - Cranio-Spine Department and his colleagues. Replacing the C5 vertebra with an artificial vertebra that can adjust the height helps the cervical spine system to function stably again.

Immediately after surgery, the patient's pain in the cervical spine spreading down to both shoulders and both arms was relieved, and his hand movements felt lighter. On the second day after surgery, the patient was able to sit up and move better. 10 days after surgery, the patient's mobility was almost completely restored and he was discharged from the hospital.
Outstanding advantages
With the previous surgical method, the doctor had to use an artificial vertebra and a separate screw plate to fix it, so it required very meticulous measurements and was quite difficult during the installation process. The birth of the new artificial cervical vertebra helps to adjust the size to best fit the vertebra that needs to be replaced. The height-adjustable artificial cervical vertebra with fixing screws is a breakthrough solution for cases of cervical spine damage that require replacement of the cervical vertebra body.

Dr. CKII. Tran Van Bien - Deputy Director, Head of the Department of Neurosurgery - Cranio-Spine said: "The successful implementation of the first artificial cervical vertebrae replacement surgery with adjustable height and fixing screws in Nghe An has brought hope to many other patients facing similar problems and opened up new prospects in the field of spinal surgery in the area".
With the goal of increasingly improving the quality of treatment and bringing satisfaction to patients, over the years, the Department of Neurosurgery - Cranio-Spine has constantly improved its professional skills, mastering many new and modern treatment techniques; especially new techniques in the treatment of spinal diseases such as: Treatment of disc herniation by minimally invasive surgery; Spinal fixation surgery by percutaneous screw fixation; Disc removal surgery, bone grafting and cervical spine fixation; Vertebral body resection surgery, bone grafting and cervical spine fixation; Surgery to treat osteoporosis by percutaneous cement injection; Spinal fixation surgery with posterior inter-arch soft braces...
Thanks to that, people in Nghe An province and neighboring areas are treated with advanced techniques right in their locality, limiting the rate of referrals and saving maximum costs for patients./.
