Vietnam wins first gold medal at World University Games
On August 20, Taekwondo student athlete Nguyen Thi Le Kim excellently brought home a gold medal for Vietnam in the women's individual freestyle event at the 29th World University Games in 2017 taking place in Taiwan. This is also the first gold medal in many years that a Vietnamese student has participated in the World University Games.
The World University Games are held every two years to expand sports relations, strengthen and develop friendship between students from all over the world.
At the 28th Congress held in Korea in 2015, the Vietnamese student sports delegation only participated in one sport, Taekwondo, and also excellently won 2 bronze medals in the mixed doubles and team events.
Nguyen Thi Le Kim’s gold medal is also the first gold medal of Vietnam at the world’s second largest sports event - just after the Olympics. In her competition, Nguyen Thi Le Kim performed excellently and won a total score of 7.59 - the second place was the athlete from the United States with a total score of 7.490.
