The wave of the EU referendum has reached the Netherlands.

(Baonghean.vn) - Dutch leader Geert Wilders on October 12 called for his country to quickly leave the European Union (EU) because of Angela Merkel's "silliness".

With his anti-immigrant stance, MP Geert Wilders has attacked the German Chancellor's open-door refugee policy and declared that he will cut ties with Brussels if he comes to power in the next election.

“We don’t have to pay the price for Angela Merkel’s stupidity… We will decide for ourselves who to welcome here,” he declared in a recent interview.

Wilders has said he wants to stop Muslim refugees entering the Netherlands, close all Islamic schools and refugee centers, and ban women from wearing the veil in public.

Opposition parties have called Mr Wilders' proposal "bizarre and unbelievable".

However, with popular support, the MP maintained his stance and proposed that the Netherlands should leave the EU if he becomes prime minister next spring.

Last week, the results of most opinion polls showed Mr Wilders as the leading candidate in the March 2017 election.

His Freedom Party (PVV) is expected to take 35 seats in the 150-seat parliament, 10 more than the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) led by Mark Rutte.
