Turmeric growing and starch processing village brings in 700 million/ha of income

(Baonghean.vn) - Farmers in Nghi Kieu commune, Nghi Loc district (Nghe An) grow 20 hectares of turmeric. Currently, when the turmeric is ready to be harvested, families have processed it into starch, earning nearly 15 billion VND in revenue from turmeric, an average of more than 700 million VND/ha.

After harvest, turmeric tubers are pressed and processed into starch by households, bringing high economic value.

This year, Mr. Nguyen Huu Dong's family, residing in Hamlet 17 (Nghi Kieu), planted 3 sao of turmeric and harvested 4.5 tons of turmeric. The above amount of turmeric can be processed into 300 kg of starch. With the current market price of 350,000 VND/kg of starch, his family's income from this turmeric crop is over 100 million VND.

At the same time, many families in Nghi Kieu commune have quite high income from turmeric. It is known that 1 sao on average produces 1.5 tons of turmeric, processing 100kg of starch, with a price of 350 thousand VND/kg. Thus, for every 1 sao, people will earn 35 million, on average, 1 hectare earns 700 million VND. The whole Nghi Kieu commune this season, cultivating over 20 hectares, will bring in nearly 15 billion VND.

With many households growing raw turmeric and producing turmeric starch, Nghi Kieu commune is planning to build a craft village "Producing and processing turmeric starch".

Currently, turmeric growers in the area tend to process turmeric into starch after harvesting to gain higher profits. Many families have purchased starch processing machines, not only to grind and process for their families but also to support other families.

Currently, Nghi Kieu commune supports hamlets 17 and 18 to submit documents to competent authorities to be certified as a craft village "Producing and processing turmeric starch".
