(Baonghean.vn) - On June 5th, Mr. Dinh Viet Hong - Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, along with representatives from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and other relevant departments, directly inspected drought prevention and control efforts in Thanh Chuong district.

The delegation directly inspected the pumping stations and canal systems along the Gang River in Thanh Khai, Thanh Luong, and Xuan Tuong communes. Generally, at this time, the Gang River has completely dried up. Although the Irrigation Company and local authorities have used machinery to dredge and clear the waterway, due to the lack of water, only one pumping station in Thanh Khai commune is still operating intermittently.

Pumping stations along the Lam River have had to extend their suction pipes by more than one meter and require dredging and renovation to ensure sufficient water for pumping. The water levels in reservoirs managed by the Irrigation Company are also only at about 50%. Due to the severe drought, only 65% of the total area in the district has been planted so far, estimated at about 3500 hectares. In the coming days, the goal is to plant an additional 500 hectares, while approximately 1000 hectares remain at risk of not being planted.

The Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee also directly inspected some industrial tea plantations in Thanh Mai, Thanh Thuy, and Thanh Tung communes. These communes have a high percentage of dead tea plants. Initial assessments indicate that about 10% have suffered severe wilting, and if the hot weather continues for the next 10 days, the number of dead tea plants in this area could exceed 20%.

After conducting an on-site inspection and listening to the report from the district People's Committee leaders, the Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee concluded the meeting by highly appreciating the district leaders, departments, and local authorities' efforts in directing drought prevention and control to serve production and people's lives. In the context of the general drought, Thanh Chuong district has skillfully managed the weather conditions and utilized all available resources, resulting in a relatively good rice cultivation area. However, due to the expected continued intense heat, the district needs to implement more decisive measures to conserve water and utilize the time when hydroelectric reservoirs release water for irrigation. Regarding tea plants, people should be encouraged to provide shade, find water sources for irrigation, and minimize the number of tea plants dying, as tea is a crucial crop for the district after rice. The Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee also requested the district to continue focusing on directing the construction of new rural areas, especially for the 7 communes registered to achieve the goals this year.
