The memorial site still preserves many important documents, including the Ho Chi Minh Collection, a gift from General Vo Nguyen Giap to the Lao leader. The material gifts, though simple, show the connection between the two countries' revolutionary movements, in times of war and peace. Photo: Pham Bang |
Vieng Xay is a tourist destination located about 30km from the center of Sam Neua town, Hua Phan province (Laos), about 55km from Nam Xoi - Na Meo International Border Gate.
Vieng Xay is especially famous for its system of nearly 500 caves, many of which were chosen as places for living, working and carrying out revolutionary activities by senior leaders of the Party, State and ministries, departments and branches of Laos during the period 1964-1975.

Under the cover of the green forest canopy, the outside of each cave is also decorated with Hom Phay flowers with characteristic purple-red leaves. That red color symbolizes the blood sacrifice of many people in the resistance war to protect independence and maintain sovereignty in the Land of a Million Elephants. Photo: Pham Bang |
Among them, the cave where the late General Secretary and President Kaysone Phomvihane and Prince Souphanouvong once lived and worked stands out. The cave is well preserved, still showing the working place, shelter, kitchen area, living room, dining room, reading room... connected to the Politburo meeting room by a 50m long road dug through the mountain by Vietnamese engineering troops in 1967.
The establishment of this base area was also due to the requirement of the Vietnam - Laos fighting alliance, joining forces to fight the common enemy, for the independence and freedom of each country. This is the result of the spirit, intelligence and efforts of the cadres, party members and people of the two countries; it is a symbol of a rare, pure, loyal and exemplary international spirit.
