Old farmer grows 'strange' jackfruit variety with giant segments, named after himself
Once, by chance, when cross-pollinating different types of jackfruit, an old farmer in the West unexpectedly created a jackfruit variety with fruit weighing up to 40kg. The jackfruit segments are very thick, bright yellow, weighing more than 200 grams, and delicious.
This unique jackfruit variety is grown in the garden of Mr. Nguyen Thanh Son (residing in Cho Lach district, Ben Tre).
Mr. Son said that in the West there are many varieties such as coconut jackfruit, Thai jackfruit, To Nu jackfruit, Nghe jackfruit,... but he found that the effectiveness of these jackfruit varieties is not high, so he wanted to crossbreed a special jackfruit variety named after him.
From then on, this old farmer started growing many types of jackfruit and started crossbreeding them. By 2016, the jackfruit tree in his garden bore unusually large fruit, with huge segments when ripe, and thick, delicious flesh.
“Knowing that this is a rare jackfruit variety, I tried to propagate it. After nearly 3 years of experimental planting, each tree now produces 4-6 fruits, each fruit weighs an average of 20kg, with some weighing over 40kg. The segments inside are also very large, with some weighing over 200gr,” said Mr. Son.

According to Mr. Son, the reason for such a strange jackfruit variety is because he cross-pollinated jackfruit varieties and then took the seeds to plant as a sexual hybrid.
“During the planting period, I selected trees that had high yield, good quality, and beautiful appearance to keep as seeds. This jackfruit tree bears fruit quickly and has a large weight... so I propagated and planted it,” the old farmer said. He named this new jackfruit variety “Thanh Son”, after his name.
The new jackfruit variety produces large fruit and segments, is very easy to grow, will bear fruit after 18 months and can produce fruit all year round regardless of the season.
In particular, from picking to ripening is about 7-10 days, so it is very convenient for long-distance transportation.
Currently, the new jackfruit variety is very popular in the market, and its selling price is 2-3 times higher than other jackfruits, averaging 80,000-150,000 VND/kg. There are times when Mr. Son has no goods to sell. He commented: "Compared to common jackfruit varieties, the new jackfruit variety has many advantages, higher yield, larger fruit, larger segments, and moderate sweetness that can be dried or eaten fresh."
