Russia is considering establishing a new missile defense system.

On May 14, Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed with the country's Defense Ministry leaders the development of a new missile defense system as well as countermeasures against existing missile defense systems.

Attending the meeting with President Putin were Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu; Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, General Valery Gerasimov; Deputy Minister of Defense Yuri Borisov, and chiefs of staff of the branches of the Russian Armed Forces.

Addressing geopolitical issues, Chief of General Staff Gerasimov warned that by 2030, the level of existing and potential military threats to Russia could "increase significantly." This level depends primarily on the competition for fuel and energy resources among the world's leading nations, as well as on consumer markets and living space...

Gerasimov asserted that the competition for raw materials would lead countries to strengthen their military capabilities, and that this posed a potential threat to Russia's national security.

Last March, General Gerasimov also reviewed and assessed the results of the reforms in the Russian military, which were initiated during the tenure of former Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov.

The general stated that the proportion of new weapons introduced into the military has increased to 16% in recent years, and Russia aims to raise this rate to 70% by 2020.
