Be respectful to the people.

The people have not forgotten the pressures that police officers have to endure; however, first and foremost, police officers must live up to their oath and their mission: "For the peaceful and happy lives of the people."

On the same day, while the public was following the trial at the Ho Chi Minh City People's Court of traffic police officer Pham Sy Hoai Nhu for allegedly ordering thugs to beat a traffic violator, in Hanoi, reporters covering an incident on Nhat Tan Bridge were assaulted and obstructed by police officers.

Neither incident was the first of its kind. The only difference is that this time the traffic police officer received a 12-year prison sentence, and this time, the assault on the journalist was proven with clear, complete, and convincing images and videos.

Public opinion was outraged, but no one was surprised. For a long time now, the image of the police officer, which should have been very positive, has been tarnished in various ways by inappropriate behavior and attitudes that have occurred publicly in many places.

People are sometimes surprised to hear these things mentioned: The third oath of a police officer: “Respect and be courteous to the people. Be ready to protect the lives, property, rights, and legitimate interests of the people. Dedicate your entire life to serving the people. For the peaceful and happy life of the people”;

The fifth of the ten disciplinary rules for police officers states: “Uphold the spirit of unconditional service to the people. Maintain a friendly, polite, and appropriate attitude when interacting with everyone. Respect the elderly, love children, respect women, and assist the disabled. Do not be arrogant, authoritarian, violent, or cause trouble or harassment to the people.”

Only by fulfilling that oath and those regulations can a police officer be worthy of the title of People's Police.

Everyone knows that police officers frequently work in high-pressure environments: a busy intersection, a horrific accident, a gruesome murder, or confronting criminals... In these circumstances, the police officer in their uniform is the embodiment of the law, the person people rely on, trust, and expect to discern right from wrong.

Pressure is a condition for police officers to prove themselves: they have undergone a very rigorous selection and training process to perform the duty of protecting lives. Pressure cannot be used as an excuse for police officers to violate the law.

It's no coincidence that the police are so protected by law; the public hasn't forgotten the case of the 12th-grade female student who, out of anger, slapped a traffic police officer and was sentenced to 9 months in prison.

It's no coincidence that the police are so highly regarded. Newspapers still feature articles, images, and thank-you notes for the police officer who helped an elderly person cross the road, or cooked a packet of instant noodles for a homeless person who fainted on the street; the traffic police officer at the beginning of the Chương Dương bridge who was greeted with waves from thousands of people during his last shift before retirement; and the police officer who was exposed to the elements while on duty who immediately received support and assistance...

The people have not forgotten the pressures that the police have to endure, and are once again ready to extend their hands and add more eyes to support them.

However, first and foremost, a police officer must live up to their oath and their mission: "For the peaceful and happy lives of the people," and the first and foremost requirement is: "Towards the people, they must be respectful and courteous."
