The construction of the national flag pole on Mat Island aims to affirm the sovereignty of the nation's maritime territories and islands, while also educating the younger generation about participating in the preservation of the homeland's seas and islands. This activity is part of the "Homeland on the Edge of the Waves" program and is also the first project in a series of flag pole constructions on five frontier islands between the Central Youth Union and Cienco4, including: Mat Island (Nghe An); Son Duong Island (Ha Tinh); Hon Me (Thanh Hoa), Cu Lao Cham Island (Quang Nam), and Son Cha Island (Thua Thien Hue).
The national flag pole on Mat Island is built on a 30m2 plot, with a height of 22.66m. The base of the pole is clad in granite, and the flag measures 4x6m, facing the sea. The total investment is 1.25 billion VND, of which youth union members in Nghe An province contributed 250 million VND, and CienCo4 provided 1 billion VND. The project is expected to be completed during Youth Month and the 84th anniversary of the founding of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union on March 26, 2015.
