On January 25, Nghe An Provincial People's Court opened a first-instance criminal trial to try defendant Nguyen Thi Thinh (born in 1967), residing in Dien Hong Commune (Dien Chau) for the crime of "Illegal drug trafficking"; defendant Tran The Anh (born in 1988), residing in Dien Hong Commune, was prosecuted for the crime of "Illegal possession of drugs”.

Thinh is a defendant who has been tried twice for drug-related crimes. Defendant Anh has been imprisoned twice for "Theft of property" and "Drug trafficking".

On August 7, 2020, Thinh went to Tri Le commune (Que Phong) to visit his daughter. On August 9, Thinh took a bus back to his hometown and hid the drugs on the roof. Two days later, Tran The Anh contacted Thinh to buy a package of drugs for 5 million VND.

Following Thinh's instructions, Anh put money in a cigarette pack and threw it at Thinh's gate. Then, Thinh put drugs in toilet paper and left it in front of the gate for Anh to come and get it himself.

He then took some of the drugs to use, and brought the rest to a hotel in Dien Hong commune at 0:30 on August 12. Seeing the police, Anh quickly threw the drugs on the street and was caught red-handed by the police with more than 19 grams of drugs.

From Anh's testimony, the investigation agency conducted an emergency search of Thinh's residence and discovered more than 220 grams of drugs.

In court, the two defendants admitted to their crimes. Defendant Anh said he bought the drugs because he was addicted to drugs. Defendant Thinh admitted to trafficking drugs for profit, despite having been imprisoned twice before.

Both defendants asked the court to consider and reduce their sentences. The panel sentenced Nguyen Thi Thinh to 20 years in prison for "Illegal drug trafficking", and defendant Tran The Anh was sentenced to 7 years in prison for "Illegal drug possession".
