The Russian Federation has donated the first 1,000 doses of Sputnik V vaccine to Vietnam, which have now been stored and refrigerated.

The batch of Sputnik V vaccine is a gift from the Russian Federation, brought to Vietnam by Mr. Nikolai Patrushev, Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, this morning, March 16, during a 2-day working trip in Hanoi.

Mr. Dang Viet Hung, Director of the Department of International Cooperation, Ministry of Health, said that this morning, the Ministry of Health received this batch of vaccines from Noi Bai airport, and immediately transferred them to the cold storage of the Central Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology for preservation.

The vaccine batch consists of 1,000 doses. In the coming time, the coordination of this vaccine batch will be decided by the Government, and can be regulated by the Ministry of Health or other units.

Deputy Minister of Health Tran Van Thuan said that this year, Vietnam is certain to have 60 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccine, of which 30 million doses are from the global vaccine supply program COVAX, and 30 million doses are ordered by Vietnam.

In addition, the Ministry of Health is also actively negotiating with pharmaceutical companies Pfizer, Moderna (USA), Sputnik V (Russia)... to get more vaccines.

On February 25, the Drug Registration Advisory Council also proposed that the Ministry of Health approve two more Covid-19 vaccines in addition to AstraZeneca. These are the vaccine of Moderna Company (USA) and the Sputnik V vaccine of JSC Generium Company (Russia) for urgent use in preventing and fighting the Covid-19 epidemic in Vietnam.

Vietnam's target plan is to have enough 150 million doses of vaccine this year before domestic batches of Covid-19 vaccines can be produced on a large scale by the end of this year or early next year.

According to the results of phase 3 clinical trials published in The Lancet, the Sputnik V vaccine is up to 91.6% effective, with a rate of 91.8% in volunteers over 60 years old. After vaccination, 98% of volunteers produced antibodies against the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
