Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Tien Dung, former Head of the Pediatrics Department (Bach Mai Hospital, Hanoi), stated that approximately 20-30% of sore throat cases are caused by Group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus. Only cases where sore throat caused by this bacterium is not treated thoroughly are at risk of complications such as rheumatic fever, arthritis, and glomerulonephritis.

Breaking News: 20 students in a commune in Nghe An province suffer from kidney failure, 2 have died.

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Tien Dung stated: Up to 80% of childhood sore throats are caused by viruses, so they are not dangerous and resolve on their own if the body's resistance is good. Only about 20-30% of sore throat cases are caused by group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus. Infection with this bacterium can easily lead to complications such as rheumatic fever, arthritis, and glomerulonephritis if not treated thoroughly.

Streptococcal pharyngitis caused by group A hemolytic streptococcus is common in children over 5 years old. However, as children get older, parents tend to be more complacent, not paying close attention to the symptoms and often self-treating with over-the-counter medications.

The most basic signs of streptococcal pharyngitis in children are fever, fatigue, coated tongue, sore throat, headache, and abdominal pain. They are especially often accompanied by swollen and painful lymph nodes in the neck and jaw area.

The challenge with this disease is recognizing the symptoms so that antibiotics are taken thoroughly and in the recommended dosage to eradicate Group A hemolytic streptococcus. Absolutely do not stop taking the medication prematurely after 2-3 days if you feel better; this is very dangerous because the disease may only be slightly improved, not completely cured. Patients risk developing antibiotic resistance and experiencing a recurrence of strep throat caused by Group A hemolytic streptococcus.

On February 22nd, Associate Professor Dr. Luong Ngoc Khue, Director of the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment, stated that they had received information from the press regarding 20 students in a mountainous commune suffering from glomerulonephritis, including two fatalities.

According to Mr. Khue, following the incident, the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management (Ministry of Health) requested the Nghe An Provincial Department of Health to urgently verify the above incident and determine the cause.

The Ministry of Health requests the Department of Health to direct hospitals treating patients to focus on saving the lives of those currently hospitalized. If a hospital's capacity is exceeded, they should request transfer to a higher-level facility or seek assistance from a more advanced facility.

The Ministry of Health has requested the Nghe An Department of Health to submit a detailed report on the incident before February 28th for compilation and reporting to the Ministry's leadership.
