The US-led coalition is said to have carried out airstrikes on Syrian military bases twice this week. |
Hezbollah said the airstrike took place near T2, a fuel depot near the Iraqi border and about 100 kilometers west of the Euphrates River, where the US-led coalition is supporting ground forces fighting the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) terrorist organization.
Middle East expert Danny Makki commented: "The US attack on two Syrian military bases near the T2 base in the east of the country has been confirmed. This is the second attack by the US in a week."
Earlier this week, there were also reports that the US-led coalition shot down a Syrian government military drone that flew into coalition airspace.
The National reporter, Joyce Karam also informed: "Two military targets of the Assad regime were attacked in eastern Syria by the US coalition".
It is not yet clear how many casualties or damage were caused by the attack. Eastern Syria was largely controlled by IS until last year, when the terrorist group lost almost all of its territory to a counter-terrorism campaign by the Syrian army, backed by Russia, and the US-led coalition.
Previously on April 14, the US, UK and France launched airstrikes targeting facilities suspected of producing and storing chemical weapons in the Syrian capital Damascus.
The airstrike was a punitive step against the Syrian government after the US accused Damascus of using chemical weapons to kill 75 civilians, including many children, in the town of Douma on April 7, despite denials from Syria and Russia.
Russia was informed by the US about the April 14 airstrike, but it is unclear whether it was informed before the bombing of two Syrian military bases in eastern Syria this time.
