Holding the gold but letting it fall, in the last 10 minutes, the Red team let Palace score 3 goals in a row, including a double from Dwight Gayle that made striker Luis Suarez cry when he saw heaven broken right before his eyes.
A draw at Selhurst Park saw Liverpool temporarily climb to the top of the table, one point ahead of Manchester City. However, the Blues can regain that position if they win their make-up match against Aston Villa tomorrow.
Before that, Liverpool were still behind Man City in terms of goal difference, meaning that even if they had the same number of points, they would still be ranked lower. Now they have even fallen behind in the race with Man City after only earning 1 point in the last 2 rounds (losing to Chelsea in the previous round).
Man City have two more games in hand against Aston Villa and West Ham while Liverpool only have a game against Newcastle at Anfield this weekend.
"I'm very disappointed, it's silly to lose by three goals," Rodgers said in frustration on Sky Sports after the game.
Liverpool started the match with enthusiasm and led 3-0 with goals from Joe Allen, Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez, in which the Uruguayan striker set a record of scoring 31 goals in a 38-round season.
But Palace, who impressively secured their place in the top flight, came roaring back with three goals in the 79th, 85th and 88th minutes from Dwight Gayle (2) and Damien Delaney, dealing a heavy blow to the Reds' title ambitions.
When the referee blew the whistle to end the match, Suarez left the field with tears in his eyes, because in the past 24 years, Liverpool had never been so close to the championship and yet lost it all by just a hair's breadth./.
