The specifications of the UET-1 are still a mystery, only that this torpedo is 533mm in size. Although it is unclear whether Russia has completed testing and entered mass production of this torpedo, according to Jane's Magazine, Moscow has just signed a contract to buy up to 73 of these torpedoes.
Jane's quoted a Russian military source as saying: "The five-year contract worth about $126.5 million is expected to be completed in 2023."
Lieutenant General Anatoly Gulyaev - head of the Russian Army's weapons and equipment department said that the UET-1 torpedo will replace the USET-80 currently serving in the Russian Navy.
The technical specifications of the UET-1 are still a mystery, only known that it is classified as a heavy anti-submarine torpedo, 533mm in diameter, with range, speed and underwater target detection ability far exceeding the USET-80.
The USET-80 torpedo is one of the most modern 533mm torpedoes, equipped for the main submarines of the Russian Navy today.
This weapon was produced during the Soviet era, weighing up to 2 tons, 7.9m long, carrying 300kg of explosives with a range of 20km, and a cruising speed of 40-50 nautical miles/h. The USET-80 is equipped with an active/passive sonic warhead, capable of penetrating down to 400m.
With the capabilities of UET-1, once this torpedo is put into service, Russian submarines can deliver irresistible blows to enemy targets.
