Concerns for 20-year-old school located on pesticide warehouse

(Baonghean.vn) - For nearly 20 years, teachers and students of Nghia Binh Secondary School (Tan Ky) have had to teach and study in the former cooperative's pesticide warehouse.leave.

According to the people of Nghia Binh commune, Tan Ky district, the current Nghia Binh Secondary School was built on the land that was originally a pesticide warehouse left by the cooperative. After the cooperative was abolished, in 1997, Nghia Binh Secondary School was built on that land.

Ms. Phan Thi Su, a local resident, said: The school is located entirely on an old pesticide warehouse, the water source there is unusable so the school had to drill a well more than 50m away from the school campus to get water.

Mr. Vo Duy Dung - the current principal of the school said that parents and teachers in the past said that the school was built on the pesticide warehouse of the old cooperative. Around the 2007-2008 school year, while students were working at the school, many containers of pesticides were discovered.

To better understand this issue, we spoke with Mr. Nguyen Thanh Bich - Chairman of the People's Committee of Nghia Binh Commune. According to Mr. Bich, the fact that the school was built on the foundation of a cooperative containing pesticides is completely correct. The commune has reported to the Department of Environmental Protection and has taken water for testing, but has not received any response from that side.

Mr. Pham Tan Phuong - Deputy Head of the Department of Education and Training of Tan Ky district added: Fearing that teachers and students would study in a contaminated environment, the Department worked with Nghia Binh commune, accordingly considering the option of moving the school, but it was very difficult, because the relocation involved many issues such as premises, finance, etc.

In reality, on the local side, the school hopes that the authorities will soon inspect and evaluate the water source and make an announcement soon so that people can feel secure./.
