Could Kim Jong-un launch a nuclear attack next July? |
According to Express, North Korea could develop nuclear missiles capable of reaching the US mainland by the summer of 2018 and experts predict the earliest an attack could take place is July 23.
In a hearing discussing the new comments, which were first revealed in January, British Defence Secretary Earl Howe stressed:
"We assess that North Korea now has the capability to strike targets at short range. I mean Japan, South Korea and surrounding areas. Our assessment is that it could take them another six to eight months to have an ICBM (intercontinental ballistic missile) that can reach the coast of the United States or our territory."
Thus, according to the British Defense Secretary, North Korea could actually launch a nuclear attack as early as next July.
Tensions on the Korean peninsula have recently cooled down after Pyongyang "extended an olive branch" to South Korea and the US, proposing to hold summits to discuss denuclearization with Seoul and Washington in April and May.
However, despite the above signs of easing tensions, the UK Ministry of Defence's assessment is a warning bell for the UK Government to find security measures in case North Korea actually launches a nuclear attack.
However, the report said the ministry also said the UK was not a target for North Korea's nuclear missiles, as the Pyongyang regime did not consider the UK a threat.
