Researchers conducted a study to evaluate the differences between squatting and sitting. 28 healthy volunteers were asked to record their bowel movements. They sat in various positions and at different heights and timed their bowel movements. The results showed that defecating in the squatting position was easier than in the sitting position.

Long-term difficulty in defecation can cause chronic anal fissures. Squat toilets are considered helpful for people with constipation. However, other factors such as diet, water intake, exercise, medication... play an important role.There is no evidence that squatting can prevent or cure hemorrhoids.

Doctors also warn that squatting when going to the toilet is not without risks.It has been shown to cause a small increase in blood pressure in both healthy and hypertensive patients. Therefore, if you are using a sit-down toilet and want to get some of the benefits of squatting, you may want to use a special toilet seat and footrest that allows you to bend your hips and raise your legs.
