Tornadoes and local thunderstorms occurred suddenly, leaving many households in Nam Ky La and Bac Ky La hamlets of Nghi Van commune unable to react.

The strong wind caused trees to fall, crushing roofs; causing damage to many families in Nghi Van commune.

In Bac Ky La hamlet, Mr. Nguyen Huy Giap's family was one of the most severely damaged households. Mr. Giap said: The tornado collapsed the roof of a 55m2 level 4 house, the entire kitchen, outbuildings, livestock and poultry barns and all trees and crops in the garden were broken. Initial estimates show that the damage was nearly 100 million VND.

According to a quick report from the Nghi Van Commune People's Committee, the tornado injured one person, who is currently being treated at the hospital; nearly 30 houses had their roofs blown off, and the surrounding wall system collapsed. The tornado also broke 3 high-voltage electric poles in Hamlet 11, Nghi Van Commune. 300 hectares of rice and 15 hectares of corn were knocked down. The green tree system in the residential area was broken.

Leaders of Nghi Loc district and Nghi Van commune inspected the situation and directed the overcoming of the consequences of storms in Nghi Van commune.

Mr. Le Viet Tuan - Secretary of the Nghi Van - Nghi Loc Commune Party Committee said: "The damage caused by the storm is estimated at nearly 1 billion VND. The biggest difficulty of the commune at present is the complete loss of the electricity system. The green tree system has fallen down, so currently, we are mobilizing forces and equipment such as saws to help people clean up to create conditions for people to travel conveniently and safely".

Immediately after the tornado occurred, the Party Committee and authorities at all levels were present in time to encourage the people and find measures to overcome the consequences. They directed the hamlets to count and report the damage so that the commune could report to higher levels. At the same time, they mobilized local forces to help people overcome the consequences and stabilize their lives.

The tornado also damaged over 300 hectares of rice and corn of Nghi Van residents.

Comrade Dinh Thi Tam - Deputy Secretary of Nghi Loc District Party Committee added: "After receiving news that a tornado had occurred in some hamlets in Nghi Van commune. We went down to inspect and directed departments and organizations to mobilize forces to help people overcome the consequences and stabilize their lives. The immediate task is to re-roof, cut down fallen trees, and take the injured to the emergency room.... At the same time, direct the commune to count the damage and report back to the District People's Committee as soon as possible."

Thai Quang Hamlet, Nghi Thai Commune, was the epicenter of the tornado and suffered heavy damage with 14 houses having their roofs blown off and being severely damaged. In addition, Thai Binh Hamlet had 4 houses and Thai Cat Hamlet had 3 houses with their roofs blown off.

When the rain stopped, people took the opportunity to help each other repair their houses' damaged roofs.

Currently, the hamlet and commune authorities and local people have focused on overcoming the consequences of the storm.
