The man, arrested on October 31 after nine bodies were found inside his apartment in a Tokyo suburb, said he killed the victims on their first meeting.

Takahiro Shiraishi, 27, admitted to killing nine people, believed to be eight women and one man, the Japan Times reported, citing police. He told investigators that he met them through Twitter and lured them to his apartment with the offer to help them commit suicide.

"I have killed nine people since moving into that apartment on August 22," Shiraishi confessed. Police are currently trying to identify the victims through DNA testing.

Shiraishi worked as a pimp in Tokyo’s Kabukicho red-light district. He said one of the reasons he killed his victims was to steal money. The largest sum he took was 500,000 yen ($4,410) from one of his victims. He also admitted to attacking some of the women with the intention of raping them.

Police found heads and other body parts in coolers and tool boxes at Shiraishi’s apartment in Zama, Kanagawa. The victims had multiple cuts on their bodies. About 240 bones were found in the apartment.

Police also found a saw, suspected to be the murder weapon.

Police launched an investigation after surveillance cameras captured images of Shiraishi walking with a woman who was reported missing from her home in Hochiojo, a western suburb of Tokyo, in late October.

The two were seen near JR Hachioji Station and Sobudaimae Station on the Odakyu Railway Line, near Shiraishi's apartment, on October 23.

A message posted on the woman’s personal Twitter account on September 20 said she was “looking for someone who will die with me.” She did not want to live anymore but did not want to die alone.

Shiraishi told police that he sent a message "let's die together" to the woman via Twitter.

Shiraishi's neighbours were left in shock and disbelief after nine bodies were found in his apartment. One neighbour described the suspect as "cheerful, kind and polite".

According to an 84-year-old man who knew the Shiraishi family, he seemed to be a caring young man who often visited his father, who lived alone in Zama. His mother and younger sister left a few years ago.
