((Baonghean.vn) - During a meeting with US President Donald Trump in early April in Florida, Chinese President Xi Jinping asked the White House boss not to apply tough measures against North Korea for 100 days. Instead, Beijing will put pressure to change Pyongyang's policies - the Asahi newspaper (Japan) quoted a US source.

Accordingly, President Trump emphasized that 90% of North Korea's foreign trade depends on China. This is the "leverage" for Beijing to make strong moves and impacts on Pyongyang. If China does not use that "tool", the US will unilaterally impose sanctions against leading Chinese companies, including financial companies that cooperate with North Korea. These companies will be banned from doing business with US banks and corporations. At that time, it will certainly deal a heavy blow to Beijing's economy.

In agreement with the US leader, President Xi Jinping proposed that the US give China 100 days to put pressure on Pyongyang. Furthermore, the two sides also reached an agreement that in case North Korea takes new provocative actions, they will unilaterally deploy drastic measures to counter.

According to the Asahi newspaper, China has the ability to impose restrictions on remittances and block oil supplies to North Korea.

The 100-day period will end in July, when the G20 Summit takes place in Germany, where the leaders of China and the United States will meet next. Accordingly, "North Korea should exercise restraint, especially not conduct a sixth nuclear test," the Asahi newspaper advised.

On May 21, North Korea tested the Pukgukson-2 medium-range ballistic missile, which was launched from the Pukchang area in South Pyongan province and flew about 560km before falling into the sea east of North Korea. Photo: AP

Meanwhile, on May 21, North Korea continued to conduct the test of the Pukgukson-2 medium-range strategic ballistic missile. According to the KCNA news agency, leader Kim Jong-un personally supervised the test and was satisfied with the results. At the same time, he decided to "start mass production of missiles for the country's special strategic forces."

The United Nations Security Council has repeatedly issued resolutions banning North Korea from any activities related to the manufacture of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles. But the country has continued to defy the bans, claiming that such activities are only aimed at protecting the country's national security and defense against the hostile attitude of the United States.

According to Reuters, regarding this issue, on May 23, the United Nations Security Council will hold a closed session at the request of the United States, Japan and South Korea./.
