NDTV reported that flash floods and landslides occurred at midnight on August 3, destroying hundreds of homes in the area. The floods also swept away several bridges and a long section of the Gangotri National Highway.
"We have dispatched rescue teams to the affected areas," official R. Rajesh Kumar told AFP. He also said hundreds of pilgrims were stranded due to the floods.
Border guards and disaster response teams are currently involved in rescue efforts. Approximately 200 families have been evacuated to higher ground. The weather agency warns that rain will continue today, August 5th.
“Nearly 2,000 people have been affected by the floods. Around 200 households have lost their homes and have been temporarily housed in buildings and schools,” said Vijay Bahuguna, the official in charge of Uttarakhand state.
According to NDTV, this is the most severe flooding in Uttarkashi in over 30 years.
Last month, heavy rains caused floods and landslides that claimed the lives of more than 120 people in northeastern India, forcing another 6 million to flee their homes and evacuate.
