On January 30 alone, flooding and heavy rains forced 17,000 people in the central province of Zambezia and the northern city of Nampula to flee their homes.
With the assistance of the United Nations, the Mozambican government has set up 30 temporary camps to house flood evacuees. The country's aid agencies have also appealed to the UN for $5 million in assistance to help flood victims.
Mozambique is an African country frequently affected by floods. Since 2000, floods have claimed the lives of at least 800 people in the country.
