Tricking two young men into going to Cambodia to demand ransom
The Department of Investigation of Social Order Crimes of Vinh Long Province Police (PC45) said it is handling the case of two young men in Vinh Long City who were tricked by a stranger into going to Cambodia to demand ransom even though their families had already brought the two young men home.
According to the family's statement, on December 21 and 22, the family of Ms. Huynh Thi My L. (58 years old, residing in Vinh Long City) received many consecutive calls from Cambodia. Strangers asked the family to bring 8,500 USD to Cambodia to ransom their lives, otherwise they would kill two young men, Nguyen Tan Dat and Thai Huynh Phong, to take their organs.
Immediately, the family reported to the police. According to Phong's aunt, worried about the safety of their children and grandchildren, on December 22, after mortgaging their house, the two families rented a car, along with six detectives from Vinh Long Provincial Police, to Ben Luc (Long An) to deliver the ransom as requested by the anonymous people.

Phong is still scared when he remembers the incident. |
“However, when we arrived in Long An, they called and asked us to bring the money to Trang Bang district, then to Go Dau district (Tay Ninh). Finally, they asked the family to send someone to Xa Mat border gate (Tay Ninh) and someone would come to pick us up,” Phong’s aunt said.
"They kept urging and warning us to only send one person per family to bring money to the border and to go by motorbike," Phong's aunt said.
According to Phong’s family, when they arrived at the border gate, two motorbikes came to pick them up and took them through the forest to Cambodia. “The two motorbikes drove us for a few hours before someone came to get the money and hand the two children over to us,” Phong’s family said.
Talking to us, Phong said: Seeing how hard-working his mother was, after graduating from high school, he and his sister decided to help their family. Hearing Dat invite them to go to Ho Chi Minh City to sell phones to a new person they met online, with a monthly income of 4.5 to 5 million VND, they both agreed to go to work.
“On the afternoon of December 20, Dat and I arrived at Mien Tay Bus Station (HCMC) when a new friend we met online drove a car (with two young men in the car) to pick us up and take us there,” Phong said.
According to Phong, while sitting in the car, the two young men said they were going to Cu Chi to get the goods so they could know the way, and then they would get them themselves. However, after a long journey, they suddenly said they were in Cambodia. “During the two days there, they locked Dat and I in a room, with three people taking turns guarding us. In addition to torturing, beating, and starving us, they also forbade us from talking. It was only when I met my mother and returned to Vietnam that I realized I was still alive,” Phong said./.
