Analyzing a new variant of Mirai, Bkav experts discovered that hackers are targeting Vietnam. Mirai is a malware strain that has attacked a series of IoT devices around the world, by detecting default passwords from manufacturers to infect.

In the new variant analyzed by Bkav, the list of passwords used by the malware to attack shows default account information of network operators in Vietnam.

The explosion of IoT has made security issues on devices such as Wi-Fi Routers, IP Cameras... a hot topic recently. Bkav's 2016 research results also showed that there are more than 5.6 million routers worldwide with vulnerabilities, in Vietnam alone this number is 300,000, equivalent to 300,000 network systems in an open state.

After attacking and controlling IoT devices, hackers can mobilize these devices to become botnets in DDoS denial of service attacks or control all user access in the network, perform MitM and Phishing attacks to steal bank accounts, social networks, emails, etc.

Mr. Ngo Tuan Anh, Vice President of Cyber Security at Bkav, recommends: “To prevent the risk of unauthorized access, users need to check and change the administrator password of IoT devices and turn off the feature that allows access to the device from the outside internet when not in use. On the service provider's side, the device also needs to notify customers that the default password must be changed after the device is installed and put into use.”

15 million computers infected with viruses in the third quarter of 2017, USB is the main cause

According to statistics from Bkav's virus monitoring system, the number of computers infected with viruses in Vietnam in the third quarter of 2017 remained very high, reaching 15 million computers. Of which, the main route of virus infection was still via USB, accounting for more than 50%.

Explaining why USB is still the most infected source of viruses, Bkav experts analyzed that although USB is a popular means of backing up and exchanging data between computers, awareness of safe USB usage has not improved much. Also according to Bkav statistics in 2016, up to 83% of USBs were infected with viruses during the year.

To limit the spread of viruses via USB as well as protect your own data, individual users need to equip themselves with anti-virus software to scan USB before use, limit the use of USB on strange computers. For businesses, it is necessary to equip themselves with a synchronous security policy control solution, including controlling and decentralizing USB usage according to the needs and importance of each computer.
