(Baonghean.vn) - In Yakutsk - the city known as the coldest place on Earth, this week, an unusually long cold spell has caused the temperature to drop to minus 50 degrees Celsius.

Located about 5,000 km east of Moscow, on the permafrost in the Russian Far East, residents of this city often witness temperatures below minus 40 degrees Celsius.

Anastasia Gruzdeva, a local resident who went outside with two scarves, two pairs of gloves and several layers of hats and coats, said: “You can’t fight this cold weather, you can only adapt and wear suitable clothes, otherwise you will suffer the consequences.”

Another resident, Nurgusun Starostina, who sells frozen fish at a market but doesn't use a refrigerator or freezer, says there's no special secret to coping with the cold here.

“Just dress warmly, in layers, like a cabbage,” she said.
