Man City dropped the victory in extra time

November 6, 2016 06:50

Marten de Roon's header helped Middlesbrough draw with Guardiola's side at the Etihad.

It seemed that two resounding victories, 4-0 against West Brom and 3-1 against Barca, would set the stage for Man City to easily win against the Premier League newcomer, however, that did not happen.

Pep Guardiola's team opened the scoring through Sergio Aguero in the 43rd minute but wasting too many chances cost them. In the 90+1 minute, Marten de Roon headed the ball into the net of Claudio Bravo, bringing a valuable point to Middlesbrough.

Man City had 19 shots in the first half but only one was successful when Aguero made his 18th shot. It was the Argentine striker's 150th goal for Man City. A familiar goal from Aguero when he ran in to meet Kevin De Bruyne's low cross and then tapped the ball into the net of Victor Valdes.

Before Aguero's goal, Man City created many chances but their shots could not beat the veteran Spanish goalkeeper. Victor Valdes had a sublime day, showing off the great reflexes of his peak at Barca.

Middlesbrough played much better in the second half than in the first half. In the 47th minute, Alvaro Negredo fired a shot from midfield but Claudio Bravo was able to get back and push the ball over the bar. Two minutes later, Adam Forshaw had a golden chance to equalize when he received a pass from Adama Traore in a one-on-one situation with Bravo. However, his shot was not able to beat the Chilean goalkeeper.

Aguero still had a chance to decide the game until the 85th minute, receiving a pass from Jesus Navas from 6.5m from goal but the former Atletico striker's shot went over the bar. A minute before Boro scored, De Bruyne missed the chance to shoot into an empty net after a mistake from Valdes.

Having squandered many chances, Man City surprisingly conceded a goal in the first minute of extra time. The home team's defense made a mistake when Gael Clichy was left alone to guard two Middlesbrough players when George Friend sent a high cross. Marten de Roon approached from behind Clichy and headed the ball hard. Bravo got a hand to the ball but could not block it.

With just one point, Man City can continue to lead the Premier League by one point, ahead of Arsenal and Liverpool and two points ahead of Chelsea. But if all three teams win in round 11, Guardiola's team will drop to fourth.
