Man City welcomes new recruit worth 33.3 million dollars

January 20, 2017 08:32

The Etihad Stadium team has completed the work permit application so that Gabriel Jesus can play against Tottenham this weekend.

Man City bought Gabriel Jesus from Palmeiras in the summer of 2016 for $33.3 million, but let the 19-year-old striker stay at the Brazilian club for another half year on loan.

It was not until January 3 that Jesus joined Man City, but he could not play in the new shirt because he had not yet obtained a work permit and other administrative procedures. With the completion of those procedures yesterday, January 19, Coach Guardiola can immediately use the young Brazilian star to welcome Man City at 0:30 this Sunday, January 22 (Hanoi time).

"I've watched the Premier League and I see that football here is very intense and stressful. I hope I can adapt as quickly as possible. I will try my best to adapt," Jesus said at the launch ceremony.

Man City are only Jesus' second club in his professional career and the first foreign club the teenage striker has played for. But Jesus insists he is not intimidated by the sudden change of environment.

"I'm not afraid at all when given an opportunity to change my life like this. Coming here, I also have more challenges and opportunities to change my family's life, and to give them those opportunities, I'm not afraid at all," he added.

Man City had a hard time winning Jesus against competition from a series of European giants such as Real Madrid, Barca, PSG, and Man Utd.

After becoming a Man City player, Gabriel exploded in performance. He was an important source of inspiration, with a series of brilliant performances, helping Palmeiras to win the Brazilian championship for the first time since 1994, and himself won the Golden Ball, the award for the best player of the season.

Also during his time at Palmeiras on loan from Man City, Gabriel was called up to the Brazilian national team and he quickly shone.

He was a mainstay of the Brazilian Olympic team that won the first ever Olympic men's football gold medal. In the national team, Gabriel debuted on September 1 and immediately scored a double, contributing to Brazil's 3-0 victory in Quito, Ecuador.

By the end of 2016, Gabriel had played six matches for Brazil, scoring five goals. That impressive form helped Brazil climb to the top of the South American qualifying group for the 2018 World Cup.
