Goals: Sow (2'), Lens (59') - Rooney (89').

Man Utd won 4-1 in the first leg so the English team had great confidence when visiting Fenerbahce. However, the confidence of coach Mourinho and his team was poured cold water in the 65th second. Starting from a cross from the left wing, Moussa Sow leaned down and finished past goalkeeper De Gea.

Before the first half was over, Man Utd suffered a loss of strength when the world's most expensive contract, Paul Pogba, limped off the field. Ibrahimovic's appearance in place of Pogba had not yet brought a goal when Fenerbahce had already doubled the gap. Jeremain Lens took a free kick from 25 meters, leaving De Gea rooted to the spot.

Man Utd only managed to equalize 1-2 thanks to captain Rooney in the 89th minute. This was also a beautiful goal when Rooney finished from more than 20 meters, sending the ball into the far corner.

The defeat to Fenerbahce left Man Utd in third place in Group A and at risk of not being able to participate in the round of 16 of the Europa League this season. Man Utd currently has 6 points, while the 2 teams above, Feyenoord and Fenerbahce, have 7 points.

Man Utd's remaining two matches are at home to Feyenoord and away to Ukraine against bottom-of-the-table Zorya.

Fenerbahce started with an attacking lineup, replacing Van Persie with the trio of Volkan Sen, Moussa Sow and Jeremain Lens. Meanwhile, Man Utd trusted Rooney in the highest position in the attack, just like in the first leg.

Fenerbahce's change brought immediate results. Moussa Sow's volley in Fenerbahce's first attack left De Gea helpless. The early goal gave Fenerbahce a mental advantage, in addition to the home field advantage, helping coach Dick Advocaat's team play proactively despite not having as much possession as Man Utd.

Man Utd controlled 70% of the ball at Sukru Saracoglu Stadium but the visitors' chances could be counted on the fingers of one hand. Man Utd moved the ball slowly and this allowed Fenerbahce to set up a defensive formation to defend. One of Man Utd's rare chances was converted into a goal by Rooney at the end of the match.

This is Rooney's second goal in 14 appearances for Man Utd this season. Meanwhile, Pogba's replacement Ibrahimovic has only scored once in the last 11 matches. Man Utd's ability to score is a headache as they have only scored two goals in the last four matches, since the 4-1 win over Fenerbahce.
