A 13-year-old girl in Binh Duong was hospitalized with difficulty swallowing and severe pain in her lower throat after eating chicken.

Esophageal X-ray shows an unknown foreign object in the esophagus at the level of the C2 cervical vertebra in the child. After consultation, the doctorsHoan My Van Phuc 1 Hospital (Binh Duong)performed an esophagoscopy on the child to remove the foreign object. After 60 minutes of the procedure, the doctor successfully removed a piece of chicken thigh bone 2.5 cm long, 1 cm wide with many sharp, jagged edges.

The foreign object was a large, sharp-edged piece of chicken bone lodged in the child's esophagus.Photo provided by hospital.

After removing the foreign object, the patient no longer had any difficulty swallowing and did not cough up blood. Family members said the child was eating while watching TV and was not paying attention, so he swallowed a large piece of bone.

Doctor Son Parachh, who directly performed the procedure on the child patient, said that swallowing a foreign object is a common medical accident. However, the case of swallowing a foreign object as large as this child patient is quite rare and rarely happens. If the child does not go to the hospital in time for intervention, the bone fragment can puncture the esophagus causing mediastinitis or move down to the small intestine or large intestine causing inflammation, obstruction or intestinal perforation leading to peritonitis, which is life-threatening.

Doctors recommend that people should pay attention to the following when eating and drinking:

- Check your food and chew thoroughly before eating.

- Foods with lots of bones need to be thoroughly processed and the bones removed.

- Eat slowly and chew thoroughly. Do not watch TV, play with your phone or computer, read books, or chat while eating.

- You should eat in a dining room with adequate lighting and sit in the correct chair.

Note that when a foreign object enters the airway, do not try to use tricks, use your hands to hook it out or stroke it down because it can cause the foreign object to go deeper, making the situation more dangerous. The victim should be taken to the nearest medical facility for timely and quick treatment to avoid unfortunate situations.
