The VW XL1 in the UK has a starting price of $169,000.

For a model from a car brand that is understood to be "the car for everyone," a starting price of £98,515 ($169,000) in the UK market seems a bit high.

For comparison, with the same amount of money, you could buy a purely electric Nissan Leaf (£16,490), a Toyota Prius hybrid (£21,995), or even a Porsche Caymann GTS (£55,397) and still have £4,633 left over.

However, what's special is that the XL1 model is produced in a limited quantity of only 200 units and is equipped with very advanced technology.

At the very least, you'll save on fuel as the XL1 model uses only 0.9 liters of diesel per 100km and has an impressive CO2 emission level of 21 g/km.

The XL1's hybrid powertrain consists of a 0.8-liter two-cylinder diesel engine and an electric motor powered by a lithium-ion battery, connected to a seven-speed dual-clutch DSG transmission. Another noteworthy feature of this two-seater is its lightweight design, weighing only 795 kg, and the use of small cameras replacing exterior mirrors to transmit images to an in-car screen.

VW has hinted at producing a sportier version of the XL1, possibly named XLR. This version would use the twin-cylinder engine from the Ducati 1199 Panigale superbike.
