Air India Flight AI171 was carrying 231 passengers and 18 crew members from Ahmedabad, India to London, England. It lost contact with air traffic control for 22 minutes, prompting the German government to shut down nuclear power plants in Brunsbuttel, Brokdorf, Lingen, Unterweser and Grohnd, in the north of the country.
The incident also prompted the German Air Force to urgently dispatch two Typhoons to escort AI171. The country has applied air security measures, including deploying many fighter jets on standby, ready to take off to escort potentially dangerous aircraft.

Air India said Flight 171 lost contact over Hungary due to a technical fault with its radio frequency. The flight was escorted by German fighter jets over several European countries before landing safely in the UK.
Late last month, a Jet Airways Boeing 777-300ER carrying 330 passengers and 15 crew members also went missing over German airspace. Fearing a hijack attack, the country's air force scrambled two Typhoon fighter jets to escort the plane.
