Indonesian officials said that on August 24, a Cessna plane carrying four people went missing while flying over a mountainous area near Bontang city, East Kalimantan province, on the island of Borneo. One of the passengers was Australian.

According to Agolo, spokesman for Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency, the plane departed from Temindung Airport in Samarinda, the capital of East Kalimantan province, at 7:51 a.m. on August 24 and disappeared from radar screens at 8:05 a.m. while flying over the area. He suggested that the plane may have crashed into a mountain.

The ill-fated aircraft belonged to Elliott Geophysics International, an international geological survey company. Before disappearing, the plane had conducted a geological survey at a coal mine and was on its way back.
