Scientists at the University of California, Santa Barbara, USA, have developed technology that allows people to see through walls by receiving and transmitting Wi-Fi signals from drones, IFL Science reported on June 20. In this way, the research team can create a 3D map of objects hidden by walls.
"Simulating images blocked behind walls is a big challenge, especially when it is a brick or concrete wall. But now we have found a way to redraw detailed 3D images using wifi signals transmitted from drones," said Yasamin Mostofi, the research team leader.

To conduct the experiment, scientists used two octocopters, eight-propeller drones, to fly outside a house made of four brick walls. One drone sent a Wi-Fi signal, and the other received it. By flying in a specific pattern, the technique was able to create high-resolution 3D images, revealing the structure and shape of objects inside the walls.

"The research results promise many practical applications such as emergency response, archaeological exploration or infrastructure monitoring," said Mostofi.
