US aircraft fly over the East Sea, China launches electronic warfare attack?

Weeks after illegally deploying weapons in the South China Sea, China is believed to have begun testing electronic warfare technologies.

China illegally reclaims artificial islands in the East Sea in defiance of international law.

US military intelligence sources told CNBC that Beijing has begun testing electronic warfare, after sending related equipment and weapons to the South China Sea earlier this year.

This information appeared after the pilot of a US Navy EA-18G Growler fighter jet said he encountered an unusual phenomenon while flying over the East Sea in April.

“Some of your equipment is not working, that is a sign that someone is jamming,” the pilot said on April 14, stressing that “the US military has an answer for this.”

The US Growler fighter is a specialized electronic warfare version of the F/A-18 Super Hornet carrier-based fighter.

A Pentagon spokesman declined to comment on the intelligence information disclosed by the unnamed US official.

This is seen as a move to show off China's power in areas it illegally claims sovereignty over in the East Sea. China's electronic warfare equipment can jam or disable communications and radar systems in a certain area.

In April, the Wall Street Journal mentioned China's deployment of anti-ship missiles and air defense missiles to artificial islands it illegally built in the East Sea.

China's illegally built outposts in the East Sea currently have many airports, helipads, J-10 and J-11 fighter jets, HQ-9 air defense missiles and anti-ship cruise missiles.
